How to get to Nusa Penida island by ferry or fastboat?

There are two ways to get from Bali to Nusa Penida island - by a fast boat from Sanur or by a ferry from Padang Bai port. The second option is preferable if you want to bring your own vehicle or if you want to save some money. If you find it more convenient to purchase fast boat tickets online in advance, we recommend doing so on the MyBaliTrips website.

On a ferryboat

From Bali, you can reach Nusa Penida affordably by taking a large slow ferry from Padang Bay port. The ferry from Padang Bai to Nusa Penida takes just over one hour. You can transport your own vehicle on board (be prepared to show documents and a driver's license). It arrives at its pier, Port Roro Nusa Jaya Abadi, located near Sampalan port, where boats from Bali arrive and scooters are available for rent.
To enter the port, you need to make payment with an E-money card (which can be purchased on-site for 50,000 Indonesian Rupiahs). The one-way ticket prices at the counter are approximately 60,000 Rupiahs for a bike, 250,000 Rupiahs for a car, and an additional 40,000 Rupiahs for each passenger.
The ferry arrives at Padang Bai port at 8:00 AM and departs at 10:00 AM. Loading for the second trip begins at 13:30, and it departs at 14:30 (except on Sundays). It is advisable to arrive at the port early, as the second ferry may be unexpectedly canceled.
For the return journey from Nusa Penida, the ferry departs at 8:00 AM (loading starts at 7:00 AM). The second trip is at 12:00 PM (the ferry arrives at the pier at 11:30 AM), except on Sundays.
ATTENTION!!! The ferry schedule may change without warning or notification and can be quite sudden. Not all individuals working in hotels on Nusa Penida may be aware of upcoming schedule changes. Additionally, information from other travelers about the ferry departing from or arriving at Nusa Penida at a certain time yesterday does not guarantee that the departure time will be the same the next day. Please verify the ferry departure time at the port ticket counter and allocate extra time for your journey, considering potential delays and ferry schedule alterations.
The ferry ride is almost devoid of noticeable motion, but motion sickness tablets may still come in handy. Private vendors sell bottled water and snacks. The passenger deck is breezy during the journey.
If you are traveling with your own transportation, especially by car, it's advisable to arrive early. There's usually enough space for motorcycles, but arriving late with a car may result in a lack of available spots.
During boarding, documents for the motorcycle, such as STNK and driver's license, are checked. If you don't have a license, they may suggest a solution with an additional symbolic fee. Without STNK, you might be denied boarding. If you have a valid STNK but the owner has overdue bike tax payments (indicated in the document), it's not an issue. Check the presence and expiration dates of these documents in advance.

On a fastboat

You can reach Nusa Penida from Sanur by a speedboat (fast boat). The advantage of this method is that you have a clear schedule for when your boat departs and when you will arrive at Penida. It significantly saves you time.
The downside is that you won't be able to bring your own transportation on the speedboat. If you haven't pre-booked a tour or rental transportation, you'll need to separately rent a car or a bike on Nusa Penida. Tickets for the speedboat can be purchased on the MyBaliTrips website or by checking the list of transportation companies that ferry passengers to Nusa Penida.

I will leave a fresh detailed review of the ferry to Nusa Penida from Padangbai and back.

You can't buy a return ticket online.
Online purchase opens a few hours before departure; the site doesn’t show the trips in advance. There's also confusion with the trips themselves. On the day of my journey, the site offered to buy tickets for 8 and 11 in the morning, but later the list changed to 10, 11, and 2 PM. According to the information at the ticket office, there is no 8 AM trip, and there are not two trips at 10 and 11 AM - there's only one at that time.
The evening before, I couldn't buy a ticket at the ticket office; they told me to come at 8:30 the next morning to buy a ticket, and the departure was said to be around 10:30.
There are many persistent helpers at the port who offer to sell you the same tickets but at higher prices. I advise going directly to the ticket office. I bought here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CqHntUpTigUDngWw8
The price at the ticket office is higher than online. For two people with a bike - 125k. Photo attached. The tickets themselves have the amount shown online - 87,900.
At the ticket office, they ask for passports and bike documents (STNK) from all passengers; a copy is enough.
Tickets are printed with names, and the bike number is also entered.
Now I see there's another, official ticket office: https://maps.app.goo.gl/UC1ZxrABX9eiP88p6
But according to reviews, tickets there are even more expensive (150k for two with a bike).
Next, you go to the port booth, show your ticket, and receive boarding passes. Drive further, and some guy in a uniform stops everyone, asks for tickets and bike documents. A copy of the STNK won't do; and no one will give you the original with a rental bike. A couple of tourists on their bikes tried to give him 50k for two - he said it was too little and asked for 50k for each bike. It seems these are the same guys who previously asked for a driver's license. They probably realized it's more effective to hassle over bike registration, as many tourists have a driver's license.
Then you go to the ferry pier and wait for the ferry. The ferry arrives, the conductor collects the boarding passes, vehicles exit, and loading begins. Bikes board last, after cars and trucks. Passengers go to the upper deck. Plenty of seats, shade, natural ventilation. In my case, the departure was at 10:30. The travel time is exactly 1.5 hours. Unloading follows the FIFO principle: first in, first out.
A return ticket upon arrival at Nusa Penida couldn't be bought again, only available before departure.
It's easier to return from Nusa Penida. The ticket office for the 12 PM ferry opened only at 11. Tickets for two with a bike cost 114,600. Passports and a copy of the STNK, just the same. No bribes or additional fees. The ferry arrived only at 12 and departed at 12:45. I managed to board the ferry first, ahead of the cargo vehicles, but they let only 2 bikes in first - most bikes were loaded at the end again.
The same vessel shuttles between the ports of Padangbai and Nusa Penida, making two trips a day in each direction. Loading and unloading take 30-50 minutes. Once loading is complete, it departs.

No one asked for a driver's license anywhere; the E-money card is not needed right now.
