A 50-year-old American man with the initials SLS has been named a suspect in the theft of a suitcase in Bali. He allegedly stole the belongings of a 51-year-old Bulgarian woman while she was checking into the Amnaya Resort Kuta.
Her luggage was initially handed over to a hotel porter, who briefly left the suitcase under the watch of a security guard.
“After completing the check-in process, the guest went to her room and asked the front desk where her suitcase was. The staff panicked when they realized it was no longer in the lobby,” said a Denpasar police spokesperson.
Hotel staff reviewed CCTV footage and discovered that a foreign man had taken the suitcase.
According to the victim, the suitcase contained a Fossil wristwatch, several pairs of branded sunglasses, 25 pieces of clothing, designer shoes, various accessories, medications, and hair care products — all valued at 76 million rupiah (approx. $4,800 USD).
The suspect, a teacher by profession, allegedly walked past hotel staff and security several times to appear as a guest. When the moment was right, he grabbed the suitcase and walked out of the lobby without suspicion.
The American confessed that he committed the theft because he had run out of money. He was arrested two days later at The Aromas Hotel on Legian Street in Kuta.
He also admitted to previously stealing in Bali. Police are now investigating whether there are more victims. The suspect remains in custody.
