The Denpasar Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG) reported that from October 13 to 15, 2024, the sun will be directly overhead Bali at its zenith. At certain moments, people will observe that vertically standing objects cast no shadow. During this time, the weather will also be particularly hot.
To better observe this rare natural phenomenon, you can use any vertically standing object, such as a pencil or a small stick. When the moment of culmination arrives, the shadow of the object will disappear as it will be directly beneath it.
Residents and visitors in Bali will also notice their own shadows vanish, but they must be in an open space, such as on the beach.
On these days, air and water temperatures significantly rise, increasing the likelihood of sunburn or heat stroke. Therefore, meteorologists remind people to protect themselves from direct sunlight during this phenomenon.
It is recommended to wear hats or use umbrellas when outdoors. Staring directly at the sun is not advisable.
According to BMKG, the shadowless day will be most visible at different times across various areas of Bali:
• Singaraja: Sunday, October 13, 2024, at 12:05 PM
• Amlapura: Monday, October 14, 2024, at 12:03 PM
• Bangli: Monday, October 14, 2024, at 12:04 PM
• Denpasar: Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 12:04 PM
• Klungkung: Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 12:04 PM
• Gianyar: Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 12:04 PM
• Mengwi: Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 12:05 PM
• Tabanan: Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 12:05 PM
The shadowless day phenomenon is not unique to Indonesia. It occurs in different regions around the world twice a year, mainly in countries located near the equator, such as Kenya or Ecuador. It can also be observed in some cities in India.
Across Indonesia, shadowless days will occur from September 8 to October 19. During these days, the sun will rise exactly in the geographical east and set in the geographical west, without deviations to the north or south.
The next “shadowless days” in Bali will be in early March 2025.
