The Denpasar City Tourist Office recently announced that, in addition to horse-drawn carriage tours, new walking routes will now be available in the historic center. These walking tours offer another way to learn more about the Island of the Gods’ history and immerse oneself in the local culture and customs.
Ariz Maulanan Siah, a representative of Kultara Tours, spoke about the walking tour of Denpasar, which the company has been running for several months. He noted that the historic Gajah Mada district, often called the Old Town, is especially appealing. This area has a rich history and remains a vibrant part of the capital. The company researched and prepared the route and guides, conducted test tours for schoolchildren and students, and was pleased with the results. Tour participants can learn about old modes of transport by riding a dokar (horse-drawn carriage) and exploring the royal family tree.
Creating the “Gajah Mada in Denpasar” tour took six months, including both the school version and the tourist version. This time was needed to include all significant historical elements and make the tour truly engaging and interesting. They were able to access previously closed palace areas with the support of the Denpasar Tourist Office, which also recognized the potential of this type of tourism. Many Balinese are concerned that the island’s unique culture may gradually fade if it doesn’t receive enough attention. Tours are now held every Friday and Saturday, including options in English. To register, participants must fill out a form on the website.
Head of the Denpasar City Tourism Office, Ni Luh Putu Ria Stiti, stated that historical and educational tourism should receive greater support in the provincial capital. She expressed her hope that walking tours will become popular and is committed to improving and restoring historical sites in the Old Town.
Indeed, much of the Gajah Mada heritage zone needs updating, but this is offset by knowledgeable guides who explain the significance and history of these sites.
