Denpasar has decided to keep a tighter rein on parking attendants.
Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara criticized the practice in which an attendant hands over a ticket only when the car owner comes back. From now on, the ticket must be issued when the vehicle enters. If a car is stolen or goes missing, it is the ticket that should establish the driver's right to compensation.
At the same time, the authorities plan to set up a dedicated team to identify unlicensed parking attendants. According to the mayor, a uniform alone is not enough to prove that someone is genuinely entitled to work at a particular spot: their identification number and the location assigned to them must be checked as well.
Digitalization is another area of focus. At some spots you can already pay via QR code: the driver scans the code with a phone and pays for parking without handing cash to the attendant. The plan is to expand this system to make it easier to track payments and monitor how attendants work.
The authorities have also decided to review where parking fees are currently being collected at all. Some spots may be removed if charging there is not permitted under the rules. This applies in particular to parking areas near small businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Officials say they want to turn parking from a simple cash collection into a system that ensures order, convenience, and protection for drivers. That said, the exact conditions and the amount of compensation for a missing car are not specified in the available materials.
