Starting July 22, the Denpasar city government will begin a major redevelopment of the city’s historic center. The project will cover Gajah Mada and Hasanuddin streets, as well as the area surrounding Badung Market.
The renovation includes upgrading sidewalks, resurfacing roads, improving street lighting, and enhancing the drainage system. Shopfronts will also be redesigned to follow a more unified architectural style while preserving the character of the city’s historic commercial district. Public spaces will feature design elements that reflect Denpasar’s history and cultural heritage.
Parking is another key focus of the project. Vehicles will no longer be allowed to park along Gajah Mada Street and will instead be redirected to parking facilities near Badung Market. Officials hope this will reduce congestion, free up road space, and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
The first phase of the redevelopment has been allocated around IDR 80 billion. Most of the work is expected to be completed by mid-December, while parts of the project have been postponed until 2027 due to budget cuts.
