Ceramic studios in Bali to Try a Clay Modelling Workshop

In Bali, pottery studios are more than just workshops — they’re real art spaces open to everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a professional or the last time you made something from clay was at school: the classes suit all levels. In these studios you can go through the whole journey of creating a piece — from choosing the right clay and shaping it to firing and glazing.

Why take a break from the beaches and drop into a studio? Here are a few reasons:
  • Pure creativity. Clay forgives mistakes and loves experimentation. You don’t need an art degree to make something nice — just trust your imagination and your hands.
  • A complete reset. Working with the material feels like a powerful form of meditation. When you focus on the tactile sensation, unnecessary thoughts fade away and stress evaporates. It’s the best way to truly feel grounded.
  • A piece with a story. A handmade mug, plate or vase isn’t just a shop-bought souvenir — it’s an object filled with your energy and memories. It makes a perfect gift or a lovely addition to your home.
In Balinese studios, there are usually two ways to work with clay:
  1. Potter’s wheel. A classic method where you centre the clay on a spinning wheel and literally pull the shape out of it. It’s mesmerising to watch, but it takes skill and focus.
  2. Handbuilding. The cosiest and most straightforward option. No machines — just you and the material. You shape the clay with your fingers, creating unique, ‘alive’ lines.
Most likely, you’ll be working with one of two types of clay:
  • Earthenware. The most popular and forgiving material. It’s very pliable, so it’s perfect for beginners making decorative pieces.
  • Stoneware. A good option for those who value practicality. This clay is denser and stronger, so it’s most often used for kitchenware.
A class like this is a great chance to slow down for a bit, enjoy getting your hands dirty, and take home a little piece of warmth from the island — made by you.

Serayu Pottery

Opening hours: 9:00–17:00.
Serayu Pottery is one of Ubud’s most recognisable spots and a popular place for tourist photos. Taking photos inside costs 10k IDR. It includes a gallery, a café, and a workshop.
Classes:
Pottery class (wheel throwing, earthenware/red clay)
This clay is very pliable and is great for beginners.
However, pieces made from this material are not suitable for food and drinks because they are fired at a low temperature (around 700–800°C), which makes them porous. They can absorb water, oils, and bacteria. Without proper glazing, such items retain moisture and may develop mould over time. Liquids can seep through an unglazed surface, causing stains or leaks. Also, some glazes may contain lead or other harmful substances.
That said, this clay is perfect for:
  • decor (vases, sculptures, etc.)
  • storage (jewellery stands, candle holders, etc.)
  • garden and outdoor use (terracotta pots, lanterns)
  • creative practice (painting, customisation, handbuilding practice)
Price: 305,000 IDR
Included:
  • 2 kg of clay (up to 2 pieces)
  • 60 minutes on the wheel with an instructor
  • Firing
Pottery class (wheel throwing, stoneware)
This clay is very strong and can handle high temperatures and sudden changes, so it’s great for:
  • tableware
  • kitchen utensils
  • baking dishes
It’s also considered more eco-friendly as it’s made from natural materials.
This class is a good fit if you want to learn how to make mugs, cups, plates, or bowls.
Price: 435,000 IDR
Included:
  • 2 kg of clay (up to 2 pieces)
  • 60 minutes on the wheel with an instructor
  • Firing
Pottery class (no finished piece)
This format is for those staying in Bali for less than two weeks. In that case, you simply won’t have time to collect the finished piece, so there’s no point paying extra for it.
In this class you’ll learn how to work with clay, but you’ll need to leave the piece behind.
Price: 315,000 IDR
Included:
  • 2 kg of clay
  • 60 minutes on the wheel with an instructor
Pottery class (handbuilding)
Handbuilding is a technique where you shape clay by hand without using a pottery wheel.
Before the wheel was invented, it was the only way to make ceramics.
Handmade pieces usually look more ‘alive’ and one of a kind, often with a slightly rough feel and lots of character.
Price: 350,000 IDR
Included:
  • 1 kg of clay (up to 2 pieces)
  • 90 minutes with an instructor
