A fire broke out today at the traditional market known as "Ubud Art Market" or "Pasar Ubud." Located in the heart of the tourist village of Ubud, it is one of the main attractions in the area.
Thick smoke caused panic among tourists and locals, who quickly evacuated the area. Numerous images of the heavy smoke engulfing the building and nearby roads have surfaced online.
The Chief of Ubud Police, Gusti Nyoman Sudarsana, confirmed the fire at the Ubud market, stating that it started around 1:00 PM. According to him, the fire was first visible on the eastern side of the building.
"The fire started on the lower floor of the traditional market, causing alarm among tourists," Sudarsana confirmed. The fire not only caused panic among visitors and locals but also disrupted traffic on nearby roads.
"We assure tourists that the situation is under control, but we urge them to stay away from the area," Sudarsana added.
A resident of Ubud, Agus Pranata, who witnessed the start of the fire, reported that it originated in the basement where the motorcycle parking is located. The flames initially erupted on the eastern side and then spread to the western part of the building. "Everyone was shocked and left the market," said Agus. Witnesses also reported hearing explosions.
The exact cause of the fire is still unknown. Firefighters are currently battling the blaze.
The traditional Ubud souvenir market was established in the 1980s and was originally an open-air market. It became popular for its wide range of products, including handcrafted items such as batik, wood carvings, textiles, jewelry, and souvenirs made by local artisans.
In 2022, the Ubud market was closed for renovations. The new market, where the fire occurred, opened in May 2023. It is located in a two-story building on Ubud's main street, across from the royal palace.
