Banyumala Waterfall
This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island. And despite its location being quite far from the tourist-heavy south, the journey is absolutely worth it.
By the way, if you encounter rain or heavy fog around the area of Lake Buyan, and you start to doubt whether it was worth heading to Banjar, know that it is much lower down the hill. Therefore, the weather may change significantly by the time you reach the waterfall.
If you're on a motorbike, consider yourself fortunate. The motorcycle parking is much closer to the waterfall than the car park.
From the parking lot, you first walk through the forest along a paved path with grooves. It may not be overly scenic, but it has its own charm. Further, after the ticket booth (ticket price is 30,000 rupiahs), you'll descend downwards. By the way, the ticket price includes a bottle of drinking water.
And then, as you continue down the path, you begin to immerse yourself in true magic.

From the height of the trail, you can catch a glimpse of a small secret waterfall located about 200 meters downstream from Banjamala. Remember it, and when you descend, make sure to visit this one as well.
The trail winds through the rocks, where water streams flow, creating a loop that reveals new and stunning scenery along the way.
And finally, you are greeted by the beautiful valley of Banyumala Waterfall. This waterfall is a wonderful example of how to develop a waterfall area without compromising its aesthetics. There are no woven nests, swings, wooden sunflowers, or other unnecessary decorations. Of course, there is one very important photographic element, but it is harmoniously integrated into nature – these are two bridges across the river. One is bamboo, closer to the waterfall's lagoon, and the other is a red iron bridge a bit further away.
It would be strange if such a stunning waterfall remained unknown to Instagrammers. Therefore, during the day, it can get quite crowded with people swimming, taking photos, swimming again for more photo opportunities. Fortunately, most swimmers don't linger for long in the lagoon. After entering the clear water, taking a few standard shots, they move on. The water is still quite cold.
The water here is surprisingly clean and clear even after heavy rains.
The energy of the waterfall is so breathtaking that you just want to sit and enjoy its beauty. Fortunately, there are plenty of places here to relax—whether on the rocks, benches, or in the gazebos.
If you cross the bridge over the river, you can find changing rooms and toilets. They are clean, and it's evident that the place is well-maintained.
And if you don't cross the bridge but instead follow the trail towards the gazebo and further beyond it, after about 200 meters, you can discover a secret cascading waterfall. It doesn't have a separate name yet—at least, the staff simply refers to it by the same name, Banjumala.
Absolutely, visiting such a waterfall is definitely worth the journey from the touristy south or Ubud.
And along the way, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Buyan and Tamblingan lakes, explore the Monkey Area viewpoint, and, if time allows, wander through the Botanical Gardens in Bedugul.
