If you love running, especially long-distance running, you’ll be excited to know that on August 25, Bali will host the biggest athletic event of the year: the Maybank Marathon. Unfortunately, all 13,000 participant spots have been filled. But don't be discouraged—this marathon is an annual event, so you can start preparing for the next one or come out to watch this spectacular race.
The marathon will start and end at Bali Safari and Marine Park. For those who manage to complete the full 42 kilometers, there will be the chance to discover new levels of endurance. Alternatively, athletes can test themselves in shorter distances of 21 and 10 kilometers, and there’s even a sprint for kids. The participation fee is 1,600,000 IDR per person.
This year, there's also a charity category: Maybank Marathon Run For Charity 2024 (MMRFC24). This program is designed to attract marathon runners who are not only interested in long-distance running but also in social activities. Funds raised will support charitable organizations.
While the entry fee may be high, the prize pool is substantial—2.7 billion IDR, or 141,000 USD. So, participation is about more than just running.
African runners have consistently dominated this event. Last year, Geoffrey Kiprotich Birgen from Kenya won the open men’s category with a time of 02:15:04, and Mathew Samperu, also from Kenya, won the half-marathon with a time of 01:05:23. In 2019, Kenyan runners took five out of six prize categories, and the same trend was seen in 2018. However, the marathon is open to everyone, so other runners must give their all and hope the Kenyans are not in peak form this year.
Winners will be recognized in various categories, including age groups, even up to 80+. Given the serious nature of the event, there will be extensive safety measures, including police, medical teams, and volunteers. Last year, 840 police officers, 450 volunteers, and 120 paramedics were on hand, with 26 ambulances and motorcycles ready.
The marathon is an annual event held since 2012 and was previously known as the Bali Marathon. Since 2013, it has been listed in the official Boston Marathon listings and, in 2020, was the only Indonesian race to be awarded the “Elite Label” and officially recognized by World Athletics. It has also received numerous accolades, such as being listed by The Active magazine as a race to participate in before you die and being named the most popular sports event of 2018 by The Venue magazine.
The race’s Elite Label certification includes accurate distance measurements by official experts, precise timing, and all necessary infrastructure, including medical services, comfort, safety, and media coverage, adhering to global standards.
