Balinese culture is the heart of the island and the main reason why it is called the 'island of the gods.' However, with the increase in tourism, there have been more incidents of disrespectful behavior, especially near temples. Balinese youth are sounding the alarm and suggest educating visitors.

In the first nine months of 2024 alone, 412 foreigners were deported from Bali for various offenses, ranging from inappropriate photos at sacred sites to driving without a license and illegal work. Such incidents damage the island's image and create tension between locals and tourists. Therefore, Balinese youth have proposed creating tourist etiquette based on respect for culture.
The initiative was sparked by the BASAbali Wiki contest, an online platform promoting the Balinese language and civic engagement. Youth were asked to respond to the question, 'How can we eliminate the poison of over-tourism in Bali?' The best ideas were discussed at an open forum.
This led to the creation of Balinese Tourist Etiquette, based on the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, harmony between humans, nature, and gods. The main rules include:
- not entering sacred areas without prayer and during menstruation;
- observing the dress code;
- respecting religion, traditions, and social norms.
BASAbali Wiki will launch an educational campaign on social media. The first zones to participate will be Ubud, Canggu, and Sanur. Volunteers and content creators are involved in the project.
Cultural figure and head of Puri Ubud Palace, Tjokorda Raka Kertayasa, recalled that tourist Bali in the 1970s was discovered by artists and writers inspired by the depth of local traditions. 'Back then, tourists admired the philosophy of rituals and dances. Some even requested that their ashes be scattered in the Campuhan River,' he said.
According to Tjokorda, modern conflicts do not arise from malice but from ignorance. The youth should become cultural guides to preserve the island's identity. 'Our culture is not a commodity. It is who we are. Lose it, and we lose Bali,' he emphasized.
