The Indonesian film 'Samsara' by director Garin Nugroho has proven that Balinese culture and history can captivate a global audience. APSA is an international film award established in 2007 by the Queensland government. Unlike many festivals, it evaluates not only the artistic level of the films but also the depth of cultural heritage reflection of the participating countries. This year, 33 films from 24 countries and regions are competing for the awards, including Iran, the Philippines, China, and Japan. 'Samsara' leads with the highest number of nominations – for Best Film, Best Director (Garin Nugroho), and Best Cinematography (Batara Gempar).
The film, shot in silent movie format, transports the viewer to Bali in the 1930s. Its plot revolves around the spiritual journey of two people whose fates are intertwined in a cycle of reincarnations. The main character, a poor man whose marriage proposal is rejected by his beloved's wealthy parents, makes a magical pact with the Monkey King. The ritual grants him wealth but curses his wife and child.

The lead roles are played by Ario Bayu and Juliet Widjajasari Burnett. The film's atmosphere is created not only through visual images but also through live musical accompaniment, enhancing the immersion into the mystical world of the island of gods.
Producer Gita Fara noted that the nominations were the result of a long festival journey: 'Samsara' has gone through many international screenings. Just being recognized at APSA can already be considered a victory. We hope the film finds even more viewers.
