Indonesians Minister of Public Housing and Settlement (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, has proposed building special housing for artists on the island. This idea didnt come out of nowhere “Balis real estate prices have been skyrocketing, making it increasingly difficult for creatives to find affordable housing. Land is being rapidly sold for tourism developments, making it too expensive for many local residents.
Currently, apartment living in Bali is rare. The only available housing options are reserved for government employees (ASN), military personnel (TNI), and police officers (Polri) based in Denpasar. For other Balinese residents, especially in the provincial capital, buying a home is becoming nearly impossible.
Sirait emphasized that urgent solutions are needed. During his visit to Buleleng, he urged local authorities to take action:
“I have asked for concrete proposals. Governor, please arrange a meeting with the regent and submit the proposals to Jakarta. We have programs for low-income individuals that can help address this issue.”
The minister also noted that each Indonesian province has a unique culture, which directly impacts housing prices. Bali, with its rich cultural heritage, is no exception. Sirait expressed hope that traditional Balinese architecture and culture will be preserved, even amid modern development.
Additionally, he discussed with the Indonesian Real Estate Association (REI) the possibility of creating dedicated housing for artists.
“I checked, and such housing does not yet exist. Why dont we create it? I believe there should be a professional program for artists, as they are the ones who bring our culture to life and preserve it,” he stated.
This initiative could be a significant step in supporting Balis creative community, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the islands unique cultural identity. If implemented, artists may soon have a place where they can not only create but also live with inspiration – without worrying about soaring real estate prices.
