One of the highlights of the closing ceremony was the presentation of the SBS Foundation Award, a prestigious recognition for achievements in marine science and ocean conservation. This year, the award was given to Dr. Vincent Pierioni, co-director of the American organization Ocean X, based in New York. His organization owns a unique research vessel dedicated to efforts aimed at preserving the oceans and their inhabitants.
The conference was attended by approximately 350 delegates from various countries. The program featured speeches from 40 leading Indonesian and international experts, who discussed marine conservation strategies, financing for a sustainable “blue” economy, high-tech solutions for ocean protection, sustainable fishing and aquaculture, marine pollution management, and the preservation of blue carbon ecosystems—coastal and marine life forms that absorb and store atmospheric carbon dioxide.
These issues are particularly relevant to Bali, an island undergoing rapid development but still struggling to effectively manage its environmental impact. However, it is encouraging that authorities are not turning a blind eye to these challenges but are actively engaging the international community in finding solutions.
The Bali Ocean Days initiative was first launched on January 19-20, 2024. The event was organized by the Sky Blue Sea Foundation in partnership with Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the Archipelagic and Island States Forum (AIS Forum). The inaugural conference brought together experts to discuss reducing marine pollution, protecting coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems, combating overfishing, and empowering coastal communities in marine conservation.
This time, the discussions went beyond theoretical debates—concrete solutions to the island’s environmental challenges were presented, which, if approached correctly, could lead to significant improvements.
Bali Ocean Days aims to continue developing as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration in ocean conservation.
