Bali Attracts New Airlines, AirAsia Picks Surabaya Hub

Three international carriers are preparing new flights to Bali. Tui Airways plans charters from South Korea, Jetstar Australia offers regular flights from Newcastle, and Sichuan Airlines provides a direct link to the Chinese province of the same name.

From September 26, a daily direct flight from Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) to Denpasar (DPS) on an Airbus A320 will commence. This adds over 2,300 seats in each direction weekly and provides the island's first direct connection to the 80-million-strong province of Sichuan.
In 2025, the influx of international guests is expected to grow to 14.6–16 million people. Bali remains the country's largest international hub: currently, 52 airlines operate here, 47 of which are foreign.
Indonesia AirAsia is also actively expanding. The carrier has made Juanda Airport in Surabaya its latest hub and launched a Surabaya – Bangkok (Don Mueang) route with Fly-Thru service, allowing continuation to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Da Nang, Hanoi, Tokyo, and other cities without rechecking. In the first half of 2025, AirAsia transported over 310,000 passengers on Thai routes; during the same period, more than 41,000 tourists from Thailand visited Indonesia.
Within the country, the airline has launched flights from Surabaya to Balikpapan, Berau, and Tarakan. This is especially important for Kalimantan: from January to June, the region received 6.5 million domestic trips to East and 640,000 to North Kalimantan. Residents and guests of Bali now find it easier to reach here via transit through Surabaya: a Denpasar – Surabaya ticket costs about 700,000 rupiahs, the flight takes an hour, and direct flights are operated up to 11 times a day.
