Not the most pleasant news for travel enthusiasts to the USA. As of September 6, 2025, the procedure for applying for non-immigrant visas to America has changed in Indonesia. Now, it only makes sense to contact the American consulates in Jakarta or Surabaya if you hold a long-term residence status — KITAS or KITAP. This initiative is global, with new rules not just applying to Indonesia.

Previously, there was no such requirement. Expats staying in the country with a tourist or social visa could apply without restrictions, as long as they had a passport and citizenship.
Of course, the basic option remains: you can apply in your home country if there is an American consulate operating there. But for those accustomed to handling visa issues in Indonesia 'where they reside,' the new rules pose additional challenges. For expats in Bali, this now means the need to plan ahead: either arranging a KITAS or traveling to a suitable country to apply.
