A new pedestrian bridge has officially opened at the domestic terminal of Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport. The overpass connects the terminal with the parking structure, eliminating the need for passengers to cross busy roads or navigate through the crowds of greeters and taxi drivers that used to gather on the ground floor. The elevated walkway allows passengers to bypass the chaos below, with convenient access via escalators and elevators.
The overpass is fully covered, protecting passengers from Bali’s intense sun and tropical rains. It also features several vending machines for beverages and large ceiling fans for added comfort. The design incorporates modern aesthetics, touches of greenery, and elements of Balinese architecture, offering a pleasant and functional experience.
With the completion of the main pedestrian bridge, plans are underway to build additional “arms” connecting the terminal to the bus parking area and to improve signage and navigation systems throughout the airport.
Future upgrades also include green spaces in the international terminal and the creation of a garden with Balinese Hindu statues. These enhancements are part of a larger project aimed at optimizing airport operations, addressing congestion issues that often arise during peak travel times.
The airport optimization project has been allocated a budget of 265 billion IDR, with 67% of the funds already spent. Planned improvements include better traffic flow for pick-up and drop-off areas, separating freelance taxi drivers from authorized ones, and upgrading roads leading to the airport, including toll roads.
When the work is completed next year, the airport’s capacity is expected to increase from 25 million to 32 million passengers annually. Additional strategies to further optimize capacity are also under consideration.
As Bali continues to welcome ever-increasing numbers of visitors, these upgrades aim to ensure the island’s transport and tourism infrastructure can handle the growing demand.
