Bali Plans Faster Traffic Fixes Around the Airport

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has ordered work to improve transport access to Ngurah Rai Airport to be accelerated.
Meeting participants discussed traffic jams at the airport entrance and exit, bottlenecks in Badung and Denpasar, and the fact that the problem cannot be solved one junction at a time.

Koster asked for an accurate map of problem areas to be prepared: exactly where cars are building up, how traffic flows to and from the airport, and what is blocking movement at the barriers, in the car park and on the access roads. According to him, the traffic scheme needs to be considered as a whole, because congestion in one place quickly affects nearby sections.
The development of the airport itself was also discussed separately. Koster recalled plans to expand the car park and terminal and asked the airport operator not to delay implementation.
The reason is the growing pressure on infrastructure. According to Bali’s statistics agency, almost 6.95 million foreign tourists came directly to the island in 2025. Ngurah Rai Airport itself handled 24.1 million arriving and departing passengers over the year, around 66,000 people a day.
The authorities again mentioned the water taxi, the development of maritime logistics and the distribution of traffic flows between different ports in Bali. In particular, Koster spoke about routes that could connect Nusa Dua, Canggu, the airport and other locations, as well as shifting some freight traffic from roads to the water.
