Their pilgrimage began at the Brahmavihara-Arama monastery in the Banjar area of Buleleng. The walk includes monks from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Laos. Along the way, they pass through Bali, East Java, Central Java and Yogyakarta. The finish is planned at Borobudur at the end of May.
The Balinese part of the route was short: starting from Brahmavihara-Arama in Buleleng, crossing the north and west of the island, and taking the ferry across the strait to Banyuwangi. Most of the journey is on Java. The monks have already reached Surabaya.
Borobudur is Indonesia’s main Buddhist temple and one of the most famous Buddhist monuments in the world. It is located in Central Java, near Yogyakarta and Magelang. For Indonesian Buddhists, it is the main place to celebrate Vesak: prayers, ceremonies and processions take place here, and every year monks and pilgrims from different regions of the country come to the temple.
