Nikko (Sawangan) is a fast right in the southern part of Nusa Dua, in front of the Hilton Bali (the former Grand Nikko). A barrelling, demanding wave — one of the highest-quality breaks in the area. Breakwaters were built here that changed the spot considerably — they shrank the rideable zone and killed the beach break for beginners. Over time more breakwaters were added. The wave used to be long and perfect; the spot is more compact now, but the wave quality has stayed high.

Peaks & waves

Two peaks — to the left and right of the jetty. The main peak is straight in front of the jetty. A fast, powerful barrel, advanced only. The intermediate peak is in the northern part, where the wave slows down and the take-off barrels turn into sections for turns, finishing in deep water. On a medium swell it's a great wave for a confident intermediate. You can occasionally take a left, but the main direction is the right. On a weak swell the wave can run in sections and lacks power. Head-high waves are rare, but on a good swell the outside sets up to 2.5 m wrap into barrels.

Conditions & tips

It's usually not crowded, but at the peak of the wet season (December–January), when the western spots are blown out, Nikko gets busy. The standard of the surfers here is high. There's a warung on the beach where you can leave your things. There's parking. The breakwaters are an extra hazard: the channels have changed, and the inside knocks you around hard. The current is moderate compared with the other east-coast spots, but in windy weather it strengthens and sweeps you off the peak. Beginners have no business here.
Hazards: shallow reef, breakwaters, current (strengthens with wind and swell), localism
