Nelayan is a quiet surf spot in Canggu, sitting between Batu Bolong and Echo Beach. The waves here are much softer and rarer than at its famous neighbours. The spot breaks over an underwater rock shelf with a deep take-off. Most of the time Nelayan is either flat or only offers a shorebreak. It works as a fallback when the nearby spots are too crowded and there's enough swell. Beyond surfing, the beach is heavily used by kiters — in season there are always plenty of kitesurfers here.

The wave & conditions

The wave is soft with a clearly defined take-off zone. The bottom is rock reef, but there's enough depth at the start. It needs a good swell to work — on a small size there are simply no waves here. Conditions are the same as the rest of the Canggu spots: best at mid tide, wind-sensitive. Nelayan is one of the popular kitesurfing spots in Canggu. In season kiters ride here constantly. There's a Rip Curl rental station on the beach where you can hire a hydrofoil.

Conditions & tips

Nelayan's main advantage is the lack of a crowd. It's one of the least busy stretches of the Canggu coast. The wave quality rarely justifies a dedicated trip, but if Echo Beach or Batu Bolong are too crowded and the swell is enough — Nelayan can be a good alternative. Infrastructure is minimal.
Hazards: rock bottom, unstable conditions
