Berawa is a surf spot in Canggu with a varied setup: a beach break with several peaks plus two reef breaks on either side. The beach-break peaks shift around — waves stand up at different spots along the beach, with the potential for long rides. The wave is punchy and fast — well suited to a shortboard. The lineup is relatively close to shore.

The wave & conditions

The main peaks are lefts and rights over a sandy bottom, working on all tides and swell directions. Best at mid tide. On the south reef, at the lowest tides (full/new moon) The Ledge comes to life — a fast, barrelling right about 60 metres long, shallower than it looks from the beach. On the north reef (The Bombie) there's a distant outside peak toward Nelayan — a soft right in deep water that needs a solid swell to fire, popular with SUP and foil riders. The optimal swell is 3–6 ft. It's wind-sensitive: better to surf early in the morning — the wind picks up by midday.

Conditions & tips

It can get crowded — Finns Beach Club is nearby and the area is popular. The beach is covered in black volcanic sand, so the water is murky and not clear — that's normal for Canggu. The bottom is sandy, so it's relatively safe. On the reef peaks, watch the depth. After heavy rain the river flushes dirty water into the lineup — in the wet season there's a risk of skin infections, so it's better not to surf right after a downpour. There are board rentals, parking and cafés on the beach.
Hazards: crowds, water pollution after rain
