Baby Reef is a gentle reef break halfway between the Sanur shore and the main Serangan peak (~700 m offshore). Sheltered by outer reefs that filter the swell and turn it into small, manageable waves. It works when Serangan is overloaded — here it's smaller and softer. Several peaks with lefts and rights — the wave breaks slowly and gently. One of the best spots in Bali for longboarders and for surfers moving from whitewater to green waves. Boat access only (jukung) from Mertasari Beach.
The wave & conditions
The inside has small, soft waves for those building confidence. The outside is bigger — green waves with long rides. The spot works on swell energy of 200–250 kJ; on a bigger swell it can sometimes deal out a serious beating — but overall it's softer and smaller than Serangan. It works mainly in the morning — the wind usually kicks in after 10–11, and you have to be lucky to get a calm afternoon. Surf at mid or high tide — at low tide the reef will smear the wave out. Swell: S, SW. Offshore: W, NW. Best conditions are the wet season and the shoulder months.
Conditions & tips
Park at Pantai Mertasari; the boat out to the lineup is 60–100k IDR. The boatmen take three people per run; if you go alone, it's triple the price. From Mertasari Beach, boatman Wayan Pande gives a daily report on conditions at Serangan and Baby Reef — you can arrange it over WhatsApp. Another drop-off point with board rental is SANUR SURF School & Boat Taxi. The spot gets heavily packed with Korean surfers — armies arrive from around 7:30 in the morning. In the off-season there can be rubbish in the water and an unpleasant smell. Despite the soft wave, the bottom is coral reef and wipeouts mean cuts. For a first time it's better to go with an instructor — a beginner shouldn't go alone: the boat logistics, the reef and the inability to simply walk back to shore (700 m out) make the spot uncomfortable without experience.
