Primary years (grade 5)
The BIS offers the IB curriculum at all class levels. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is taught from preschool to 5th grade. The PYP prepares students to become active, caring learners who show respect for themselves and others and are capable of participating in the world around them.
The PYP:
considers the academic needs of students and their social and emotional well-being;
encourages students to develop independence and take responsibility for their own learning;
supports students' efforts to understand the world and function effectively in it; helps students establish personal values as a foundation for international-mindedness.
The PYP views the student as central to their learning. The focus is on developing positive attitudes such as respect, enthusiasm, and responsibility. Students learn key skills that will make them independent and active.
Great emphasis is placed on developing research, communication, social, self-management, and thinking skills.
Critical thinking and problem-solving are important aspects of the program.
Children learn to work independently, but they are also often asked to work successfully in collaboration.
