Which bike to rent in Bali: review of the main models.

So, you've arrived in Bali and made one of the wisest decisions to experience complete freedom here – renting a scooter. That is, of course, if you have the skills to ride a two-wheeled vehicle. If not, it's better to undergo training first.
Generally, in our traditional understanding, a "bike" refers to a large motorcycle. However, in Asia, both a small scooter and a sporty Kawasaki are commonly referred to by the same term – "bike."
So, which bike to choose exactly? There is no one right answer. It all depends on your weight, height, experience, whether you'll be riding solo or with a passenger. Well, and of course, your goals! We have prepared a review of the most popular models for you:

Yamaha NMAX

"If it's a bike, then it's the Nmax!" - that's what most people think when deciding to rent a scooter in Bali. And it's genuinely one of the most popular motorbikes in Bali, both among tourists and locals, and deservedly so. It's really good—optimal power, comfortable seating for both the driver and the passenger, and a spacious trunk. One of the advantages of this bike is its ease of maintenance due to its widespread use, and there are plenty of spare parts in service centers—easy to replace if you scratch the plastic.
On the NMAX, if you install racks, it will be very convenient to carry a surfboard—important for many. The flip side of the flagship's popularity is the price, which skyrockets during the season, and there's usually no room for bargaining—remember how last fall, there were long queues for good NMAX. However, there may be models that are just as good, or even better suited to you in terms of technical characteristics. And they will cost less. In general, don't get fixated on NMAX.
Model: Yamaha All New Nmax 155 '21-23
Trunk volume: 30 liters
Power: 15.1 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 7.1 liters
Average consumption: 2.5 l/100 km
City maneuverability: 5 out of 5
Comfort for long rides: 5 out of 5
Comfortable driver height: from 160 cm
Comfortable weight for driver with passenger: up to 168 kg

HONDA PCX

A fairly high-quality and comfortable bike with a distinctive appearance. In terms of operation, it can be compared to the Yamaha NMax. Essentially, they are about the same. The difference lies in the appearance, depending on personal preferences. It's better to get it with insurance because the spare parts are not cheap and may not always be available.
If you were considering the NMax, arrange test rides for both scooters, and it's quite possible that the Honda model will suit you even better. Many consider it the most predictable and unhurried motorcycle in its class, ideal for traveling around the island. It has comfortable suspension, a smooth ride, ABS, TCS, and a spacious trunk.
Some beginners note the relatively high weight and insufficient maneuverability as drawbacks.
Trunk volume: 32 liters
Power: 16 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 8.1 liters
Average consumption: 2.5 l/100 km
City maneuverability: 5 out of 5
Comfort for long rides: 5 out of 5
Comfortable driver height: from 160 cm
Comfortable weight for driver with passenger: up to 168 kg

Honda Scoopy

Very popular among petite girls and beginners. Although it can comfortably accommodate two riders. Stylish and maneuverable. Yes, it may be a bit more challenging to overtake on the opposite lane, and the acceleration is not as dynamic as the NMAX or PCX, but it's entirely sufficient for traveling even over long distances on the island. However, it's worth considering that if both the driver and the passenger are larger than average, it may not be very comfortable to climb the serpentine roads in the north. Excellent maneuverability, and it's easy to keep it "on its feet" even for a girl in traffic. Very lightweight - only 93 kg.
Trunk volume: 17 liters
Power: 9 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 4.2 liters
Average consumption: 2 l/100 km
City maneuverability: 5 out of 5
Comfort for long rides: 4 out of 5
Comfortable driver height: from 145 cm
Comfortable weight for driver with passenger: up to 130 kg

Honda Vario 125/150

Also suitable for beginners - it's a bit more dynamic than the Scoopy. There's space for a bag in the front, and you can attach it to the hook. It's quite comfortable for two non-large passengers, for example, a guy weighing 77 kg and a girl up to 50 kg. One drawback is that if you are 180 cm tall or taller, you might find it challenging to place your legs. The latest generation of the Vario has a keyless start and an improved braking system, and in terms of agility on the highway, it may not be inferior to the NMAX and PCX.
Considering its cost, this scooter is perfect for both those who are just starting their journey into the world of motorcycles and experienced riders. The updated model of the Honda Vario 125cc from 2022, in particular, will impress female riders with its graceful handling.
Trunk volume: 18 liters
Power: 11.1 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 5.5 liters
Average consumption: 2.3 l/100 km
City maneuverability: 5 out of 5
Comfort for long rides: 3 out of 5
Comfortable driver height: up to 180 cm
Comfortable weight for driver with passenger: up to 160 kg

Yamaha Aerox

It has a sporty touch. It features an aggressive design and a stiffer suspension. The passenger sits high on it, and it can be less comfortable on uneven surfaces. If you plan to travel around the island alone, it's an excellent option. It accelerates briskly from a standstill and boasts good maneuverability. The acceleration is sufficient for confident overtaking. It's not the most common bike in rentals, but we recommend trying it out; many riders choose it and don't want to ride anything else afterward.
Trunk volume: 25 liters
Power: 15 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 4.6 liters
Average consumption: 2.3 l/100 km
City maneuverability: 5 out of 5
Comfort for long rides: 4 out of 5
Comfortable driver height: up to 185 cm
Comfortable weight for driver with passenger: up to 165 kg

Yamaha Lexi

A larger-sized scooter suitable for beginners. Very comfortable and quite agile for its 125cc engine. There is ample space in the front for your legs, and you can place a carry-on suitcase there. An excellent choice for those planning to travel extensively around the island with minimal driving experience. This model has proven itself as a conqueror of Bali's mountainous terrain and rugged landscapes.
Downsides include the almost nonexistent space under the seat and a small fuel tank volume of 4.4 liters, providing a range of about 150 km.
Trunk volume: 12.8 liters
Power: 11.7 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 4.2 liters
Average consumption: 2.2 l/100 km
City maneuverability: 5 out of 5
Comfort for long rides: 5 out of 5
Comfortable driver height: from 165 cm
Comfortable weight for driver with passenger: no limitations

Yamaha Fazzio

A relatively recent model from Yamaha that quickly gained the affection of riders. It serves as an alternative to the good old Scoopy. The design follows an "Italian classic" style, which is a matter of taste, but the available vibrant colors can help you stand out in traffic. It's ideal for beginners and women, and even a smaller couple will feel confident riding it. The scooter offers excellent maneuverability and high comfort due to the comfortable seating for both the driver and the passenger. A significant advantage is the space in front of the feet, where you can conveniently place backpacks or other items.
Trunk volume: 17.8 liters
Power: 8.4 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 5.1 liters
Average consumption: 2.2 liters/100 km
City maneuverability: 5 out of 5
Comfort for long rides: 4 out of 5
Comfortable driver height: from 160 cm
Comfortable weight for driver with passenger: up to 150 kg

Yamaha XMax 250

If you are planning to ride a bike in Asia for the first time, this option is unlikely to be suitable for you. It's too heavy and too powerful. The XMax is already a maxi-scooter with 250cc. It is very comfortable for long and leisurely rides, suitable for passengers of any build and height. It may not be as nimble at the start, but it excels at covering long distances. In heavy traffic and dense movement, you won't feel discomfort. It's not particularly agile between rows in traffic jams either.
It comes with a full set of modern features such as weather protection, an active safety system, and a 12V socket. The trunk can accommodate two helmets or a backpack of a decent size.
Trunk volume: 48 liters
Power: 22.8 hp
Fuel tank capacity: 13 liters
Average consumption: 3.5 liters/100 km
City maneuverability: 5 out of 5
Comfort for long rides: 5 out of 5
Comfortable driver height: from 170 cm
Comfortable weight for driver with passenger: no limitations
