The sailing vessel Budi Utama sank during a cruise from Labuan Bajo port to Komodo Island. The ship was overwhelmed by large waves and strong currents.
The vessel started to sink after the bilge pumps failed, gradually filling with water. At the time, there were 15 passengers and seven crew members on board, who were evacuated by local search and rescue teams. Authorities are now questioning the certification process and usage of the vessel, as it was only licensed to carry 10 tourists and five crew members. However, websites promoting the Budi Utama cruise advertised a capacity of up to 18 paying passengers.
Among the 22 people rescued in the incident were two foreign nationals, and after being evacuated to Labuan Bajo, two of the rescued required medical assistance. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
When planning trips that involve technical equipment, whether it be a ship, car, or climbing gear, it's important to remember that the necessary certification is not always properly conducted. Choose reliable and reputable operators; we recommend Mybalitrips.com.
Also, consider weather conditions when embarking on a water trip. Meteorologists are forecasting strong winds up to 25 knots and high waves until June 27.
