Three-Year-Old Boy Conquers Mount Rinjani

The story of three-year-old Muhammad Wafiq from South Kalimantan has captivated social media users and inspired admiration among mountain hiking enthusiasts. Wafiq, along with his parents, reached the summit of Mount Rinjani on Lombok — the second highest in Indonesia.

In the video, the child is seen climbing the mountain under his parents' supervision, while passing climbers stop to express their amazement.
The boy's father, Muhammad Yazid, explained that he prepared his son for the trek in advance. For two months, he regularly took him on walks through the hills in South Kalimantan to get him accustomed to long routes. "I've been taking Wafiq into nature since he was a year and a half," Yazid shared.
The climb was not as extreme for the child as it might seem. The family was accompanied by two porters who helped not only with carrying items but also carried Wafiq on difficult sections. "He didn't walk the entire way himself — he was carried most of the way. For him, it was an adventure, not a challenge," the father noted.
Mount Rinjani is an active volcano, standing at 3,726 meters, and among the five highest mountains in Indonesia. Climbing it is considered one of the most challenging trekking routes in the country: steep slopes, sharp temperature fluctuations, and thin air at altitude make the ascent a serious test even for adults and experienced travelers.
The Rinjani National Park administration did not impose any special requirements for the child; the parents simply secured insurance for the whole family in advance. According to Yazid, no issues arose during the hike: the boy watched events with interest, and during rain, he slept peacefully in the camp.
After climbing Rinjani, the family spent another two weeks on Lombok, exploring local attractions.
