The aftermath of heavy rains on the island continues to unfold. Powerful floods hit the Seminyak area on Sunday morning, creating such severe conditions that tourists had to be rescued using inflatable boats.
The hardest-hit area was Devi Sri in Legian. While the flood wasn’t exactly biblical, the water level reached up to an adult’s waist in some parts. In other areas, it was shallower, rising to knee level.
Several foreign tourists had to be evacuated with their belongings from their villas by the SAR rescue team using boats. According to those affected, they woke up to find the water rising near their beds. Alongside them, a few Indonesian women and children were also rescued.
Devi Sri and its surroundings host many villas and other buildings. Local residents were also unable to enter their homes and had to wait for the water to recede. Several cars and motorbikes were also submerged.
The flooding was caused by a sharp rise in water levels in the Tukad Mati River. Continuous rainfall in the upper reaches of the river overwhelmed its banks, causing it to overflow and flood nearby settlements.
During the disaster, municipal services in Badung worked to pump water out to help the floodwaters recede more quickly. Officers from the Public Works Ministry used five portable pumps to drain water from the flooded lowlands back into the river.
The raging Tukad Mati River flooded not only Legian but also an upscale residential area on Belong Street in Seminyak. Flooding there began around 3 a.m. on Sunday. Several people had to be evacuated from villas in this area as well.
At the same time, Ketut Murdika, head of the emergency and logistics department, reported that evacuations of residents and tourists are still ongoing. City services and rescue teams are working to address the aftermath of the flooding and assist local residents while minimizing potential water damage.
