Heart and vascular diseases, oncology, nervous system disorders, brain and spinal cord conditions, digestive and liver issues, as well as diseases of the bones, joints, muscles, and tendons — these are the conditions for which most Indonesians, who can afford it, seek treatment abroad.
They leave in search of more advanced treatments and doctors with better reputations, often trained in Europe or the US. This is because Indonesia lacks a competitive hospital with world-class specialists. However, Bali is now positioning itself as the country’s primary medical hub. Starting in April 2025, the island will not only be a place to recharge emotionally but also to restore health.
A New International Hospital in Sanur
The international hospital under construction in Sanur is almost ready. Social media posts show photos and videos of modern hospital interiors. Patient rooms appear fully equipped, with beds and devices already installed and tested. Preparations are still underway, but the hospital plans to accept its first patients in spring, with a grand opening in July.
The four-story hospital, built on a 5-hectare plot, will feature 260 rooms, medical offices, and laboratories. The facility is being constructed as a sustainable “green hospital,” surrounded by 183 trees, 123 of which were relocated to accommodate the building.
Key Features and Specialties
The hospital will have five departments:
1. Cardiology
2. Oncology
3. Neurology
4. Gastroenterology
5. Orthopedics
Medical officials estimate that approximately 2 million Indonesians will no longer need to travel abroad for treatment, as they can now access world-class healthcare on the island. This also includes foreign patients, who will benefit from the state-of-the-art facility.
Global Standards and International Collaboration
• English Proficiency: All staff must be proficient in English to ensure seamless service for international patients.
• International Specialists: The hospital will employ not only local doctors but also invite foreign specialists to share their expertise and knowledge.
• Collaborations: Partnerships with Singapore’s Icon Cancer Centre, medical technicians and lab specialists from Innoquest, and academics from SingHealth Medical Centre will ensure high-quality services.
Developing Medical Tourism in Bali
Bali authorities aim to develop medical tourism, particularly in Sanur. The hospital’s management promises competitive pricing, making quality healthcare accessible to patients of various income levels.
The first departments to open will be cardiology and oncology, with operations starting in just a few months. Whether the promises of affordability and quality hold true will soon become evident.
