Safety measures are being strengthened on the route to Broken Beach on Nusa Penida. The first tourist post with an emergency call system via QR code has opened in Bunga Mekar village.
Visitors simply scan the code to contact rescuers and the police if someone gets lost, is injured, falls, or suddenly feels unwell. Broken Beach was chosen for the launch of the project as it is one of Nusa Penida’s most visited attractions, welcoming visitors from Indonesia and abroad every day.

After scanning the QR code, emergency service contacts open, including the Balawista rescue team, beach lifeguards who assist with incidents in the water and on the cliffs, the Jalak Nusa service, a local coordination service, the nearest police station, and the Indonesian National Police call centre.
The initiative was proposed by local police officer I Putu Wahyu Premana Putra. According to him, the post is intended to serve as the first point of contact for visitors and a single information centre along the route. It is also designed to improve coordination between the police, rescuers, the traditional village and local residents involved in keeping the area safe.
The post itself was built using materials left over from the international Red Bull Cliff Diving competition. Balawista rescuers, leaders of the traditional community and residents of Bunga Mekar village took part in its construction. In addition to the QR service, basic emergency equipment has been placed there.

Nusa Penida Police Chief I Ketut Kesuma Jaya described the project as an example of a simple and practical approach to tourist safety, noting that even a single poorly handled incident can quickly spread on social media and damage the island’s reputation.
This is especially relevant in Bunga Mekar, one of Nusa Penida’s busiest tourist areas, with high cliffs, challenging routes and active marine tourism.
From January to June 2026 alone, Nusa Penida has already welcomed 389,593 travellers, while tourism revenue has exceeded IDR 9.66 billion.
