Paid Road in Bali: Fast, Convenient, and with a View of the Ocean

The Mandara Toll Road, commonly referred to as 'tol,' is perfect for avoiding traffic jams, saving time, and enjoying a journey with a refreshing sea breeze instead of exhaust fumes.
Which areas does it connect?
The road connects Nusa Dua, Benoa (with an exit to Sanur and Ubud), and Kuta (with an exit to the ring road and the airport route). The route is 12.7 kilometers, so make sure your vehicle has enough fuel. It's not advisable to enter with a near-empty fuel tank.
How to get on the tol?
The easiest way is with a GPS. If you've selected "use toll roads," it will guide you correctly. For bikers, avoid the car lane. Stay on the left, where a lane is designated for motorcycles. Entering from Benoa can be tricky; you’ll need to make a U-turn at the Benoa Port gates before entering the motorcycle lane on your left.
Traffic and Navigation
The road allows only forward movement and turning around at designated interchanges. Motorcycle and car lanes are divided by a barrier; motorcycles are not allowed in car lanes. Observe entrance signs. Speed limits are 40 km/h for motorcycles (usually 50–60 km/h in practice) and 80 km/h for cars. Near the midpoint between Kuta and Benoa, there is a complex interchange. Follow signs carefully. It's best to activate the route on your GPS in advance.
Payment and Nuances
The toll fee is 5,500 IDR for motorcycles and 14,000 IDR for cars, payable only with a special electronic card. This card can be purchased and recharged at Indomart or Alfamart stores, or at a kiosk near the Benoa entrance. Here is a detailed article on purchasing and recharging these cards. Should your balance run out or you forget your card, ask the next driver at the barrier to use their card, reimbursing them in cash. This is common practice on the tol.
Traffic Features
  • Expect strong crosswinds, so ensure your helmet strap is tight. If riding in the evening or night, wear a sweatshirt or windbreaker.
  • During the rainy season, rain is common along the tol. Bring a raincoat.
  • Avoid speeding as unnoticed road irregularities can cause your bike to bounce considerably, potentially causing issues.
  • Stay left and check your mirrors to avoid being startled by overtaking vehicles.
  • When overtaking others, give a short honk or flash your high beam, especially at night, to signal your intention and ensure passage.
  • If your bike breaks down on the tol, call your rental service for help. Meanwhile, turn on your hazard lights and move to the shoulder. After a turn, roll back for visibility. If you rented from BaliMotion.pro, chances are you won’t need this advice - all bikes receive regular maintenance and are well-conditioned, making breakdowns on the tol very unlikely.
  • The tol has a call center at 14080. Call them if you need help. Assistance may incur a fee.
The tol saves time and offers beautiful views of the ocean and mangrove forests, with planes flying low above. It adds a touch of authentic Balinese charm to your journey.
