This internet detox is scheduled for the upcoming Saturday. From 6 AM on March 29 until 6 AM on March 30, both internet access and broadcasting will be shut down. This marks the seventh consecutive year that telecommunications services in Bali are halted during Nyepi.
This year, Nyepi falls on March 29, 2025, or the year 1947 in the Balinese calendar. The celebration of the Balinese New Year also coincides this time with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, Meutya Hafid, stated that the ministry has already issued a circular to all operators and broadcasting institutions regarding the temporary suspension.
The one-day internet shutdown is in response to a request from the Balinese government. It is intended to allow Hindus to focus more on prayer and meditation without external distractions. A ban on entertainment is one of the four key rules of Nyepi.
Occasionally, internet may still work in certain hotels or in specific areas with particular providers, but it is difficult to predict where exactly in advance.
As in previous years, ferry services to and from Bali and Ngurah Rai Airport will not operate during the 24 hours of Nyepi. The toll road will be closed for 32 hours. A reminder: those planning to leave Bali during this time must do so by March 28.
