All hiking routes on Bali’s Mount Agung will be closed for almost a month. Ascents will be prohibited from 28 March to 24 April 2026 inclusive, with the routes expected to reopen on 25 April.

The restriction is linked to major religious ceremonies at the Pura Agung Besakih temple complex at the foot of the sacred mountain. During this period, the Tawur Tabuh Gentuh and Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh rites will take place—among the most important ceremonies for Balinese Hindus.
The authorities and representatives of the Besakih community are asking guides, tour organisers and tourists not to try to climb the volcano on these dates and to respect local tradition. This is standard practice in Bali: during major ceremonies, access to Agung is temporarily closed because the mountain and the temple complex are considered a single sacred space. Breaking the rules can lead to serious consequences, including deportation.
If you had already planned a trek for late March or April, you should move your hike to dates after 24 April or choose a different route. As an alternative, we suggest the mystical Abang or a Bali classic—an easy climb up Batur. Or Ijen and Bromo—two of Indonesia’s most impressive volcanoes, located on the island of Java.
