Meeting Whale Sharks: A Trip to Sumbawa

Snorkelling alongside the largest fish on the planet—whale sharks up to ten metres long—is one of those experiences that’s hard to compare to anything else. Saleh Bay on Sumbawa Island is considered one of the few places in the world where your chances of seeing these giants in their natural habitat are especially high.

The trip starts in the dark: before sunrise, boats head out from the small harbour of Labuan Jambu into the calm waters of the bay. With the first rays of sunlight, the ocean surface gradually comes to life, and huge spotted silhouettes begin to appear in the clear water.
You slip into the water and find yourself next to whale sharks, moving slowly and almost weightlessly just a few metres away. In that moment, you hear only your breathing through the snorkel and the water moving around you.

Despite their impressive size, whale sharks feed on plankton and are completely safe for humans. No special training is needed—basic swimming skills are enough, and all the necessary equipment is usually included.
After snorkelling, the trip continues at a more relaxed pace: hot coffee on deck, views of Sumbawa’s wild coastline, and the journey back through rice fields and small villages, where life still moves slowly and steadily.
