Jetstar Flight Forced to Return to Bali After Unruly Passenger Causes Mid-Air Chaos

Volcanic activity isn’t the only thing causing flight delays and disruptions. A Jetstar plane carrying 200 passengers was en route from Bali to Melbourne when one of the passengers attempted to forcibly open the door mid-flight.
The restless passenger also behaved aggressively toward the crew. The plane turned around over the Indian Ocean about an hour after takeoff. In a video circulating on social media, the captain can be heard informing passengers about the incident. Upon landing back in Bali, the woman was removed from the flight by local authorities.
The passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, managed to lift the door lever but was unable to actually open the door. An alarm went off in the cockpit, and the woman was stopped. In any case, she wouldn’t have been able to open the door due to pressure differences and mechanical locking mechanisms.
“The safety and well-being of our customers and crew is our top priority, and we’re grateful to our staff for the way they handled this situation,” Jetstar said in a statement.
This is not the first case of someone trying to open a plane door mid-flight. In 2023, a similar incident occurred on an Asiana Airlines flight, when a passenger opened an emergency exit shortly before landing. He claimed he was experiencing a lack of air and wanted to get out faster. After that, the airline stopped selling seats near the emergency doors.
