Indonesia's financial regulator, the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, OJK), is discussing the idea of making travel insurance mandatory for foreign tourists entering the country.

OJK representative Ogi Prastomiyono explains that insurance is needed to protect tourists and allow for more understandable risk management during trips. The regulator emphasizes that the scheme should be competitive and open, involving various insurers, including local companies and joint ventures.
According to the Indonesian General Insurance Association (Asosiasi Asuransi Umum Indonesia, AAUI), the ideal model should be simple and affordable, with a clear minimum coverage – primarily emergency medical assistance and medical evacuation, as well as other travel-related risks. An additional practical issue is the readiness of digital infrastructure to quickly verify policies.
Currently, insurance is not required for traveling to Bali. However, medical care here is very expensive, so it's better not to take risks and secure a policy before the trip.
