Jimbaran Searches for Fresh Waste Management Solution

The waste problem has become a top priority in Jimbaran when the island's largest landfill, TPA Suwung, began reducing the acceptance of waste. Now, waste can only be taken there once a week. For an area generating about 30 tons of waste daily, this is critically insufficient. The result is overflowing containers, unpleasant odors, and complaints from local residents.

The local administration had to urgently seek a new solution. They turned to the management of the TPS3R Mandiri Jimbaran Lestari complex for help. This facility is for reducing, reusing, and recycling waste. Previously, TPS3R Mandiri Jimbaran Lestari worked exclusively with tourist facilities. The complex served about 35 hotels, restaurants, and villas in Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Kuta, and Sanur. The collected waste was sorted, the organic matter was turned into compost, and inorganic waste was recycled into paving tiles. Now, TPS3R Mandiri Jimbaran Lestari is also working with the local population.
The head of the Jimbaran village development acceleration group, Anak Agung Bagus Mutiara Arsana Putra, noted that the village lacks its own TPST — a large integrated recycling center. According to him, Jimbaran Lestari not only has the necessary equipment and personnel but is also conveniently located, allowing garbage trucks to unload there up to five times a day.
Arsana mentioned that the agreement with Jimbaran Lestari is just one of the potential steps. Efforts to reduce and recycle waste will continue.
He stated that there is currently only one garbage truck in Jimbaran, provided by the Badung Environmental and Sanitation Department. The truck regularly collects waste for free until 10:00 a.m. The problem is that some residents dispose of waste later, and the containers quickly overflow. Therefore, the authorities also plan to strengthen control over the waste removal schedule through special patrols.
Businesses have also joined the process. The head of the Badung Hotel and Restaurant Association, I Gusti Agung Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya, called Jimbaran Lestari an example of a successful solution to the waste problem in the tourist area. According to him, the complex not only reduces the volume of waste but also produces useful materials.
Suryawijaya reminded that there is a state of emergency due to waste in Badung. He urged each village to create their own TPS3R or TPST. He stated that properly designed complexes do not emit odors and can generate revenue.
Separately, Suryawijaya emphasized that the annual revenue of the district from the hotel and restaurant tax is about 7 trillion rupiah. These funds enable waste recycling to be a priority development area.
