Immigration Checks in Bali: Who is at Risk?

Immigration services have started active raids against foreigners violating visa regulations. The following groups are under scrutiny:
  • Foreigners with expired visas.
  • Illegal workers: photographers, models, trainers, and others providing services without a work visa. Many popular professions can use the freelancer KITAS, which allows you to provide services legally in Indonesia.
  • Business owners: working in their companies on an investor visa. Remember, with an investor visa, you don't have the right to even clean the floor in your restaurant; this should be done by local staff or those with a work visa.
  • Remote freelancers: working for foreign companies. Although there is no official law prohibiting you from, for example, developing a website for your client in Russia, Indonesians might suspect you of illegal work and report you to the immigration service. You would then have to spend a long time proving that you work legally in Indonesia. We recommend not working in public places and not telling locals about your remote work. If you plan to stay in Bali for a long time, consider getting a remote worker KITAS.
How to protect yourself?
  • Check the expiration date of your visa. If it is expiring soon, you can contact us for an extension.
  • Do not post ads in chats and social networks. There have been cases where a foreigner was deported for an innocent ad in a Facebook group looking for roommates for a villa.
  • If someone asks what you are doing in Bali and you have a tourist visa, say you are a tourist.
  • Do not engage in prohibited activities in Indonesia without a special visa and permit.
If you want to live and work legally, contact us. We will help you to get the appropriate visa.
