How to Keep Your Gear Safe in Bali's Humid Climate

When you bring a good camera, expensive lenses, a laptop, and other electronics to Bali, you'll need to watch out for a serious threat—humidity and mould.

In fact, this issue isn’t unique to Bali; it affects much of Southeast Asia, where high humidity levels, especially during the rainy season, can damage your gear.
Imagine finding mould growing inside your favourite lens after not using it for a month or two, or discovering that your laptop, left off for just a week during the rainy season, suddenly won’t turn on!
Cameras, lenses, and laptops are the most vulnerable to this problem.
If you're only in Bali for a few weeks, you’re unlikely to face this issue. However, if you're staying for a longer period, it could become a significant concern.
Here are some tips on how to safeguard your equipment from mould amidst Bali’s humidity:
Keep Your Laptop On
It’s best to keep your laptop running as much as possible. The heat generated while it’s on helps prevent moisture build-up.
Store in an Air-Conditioned Environment
Keep your electronics in a room with frequent air conditioning. The AC dries out the air, which helps protect your devices.
  • However, be mindful of condensation when changing temperatures. For example, taking a camera from an air-conditioned environment into direct sunlight can cause immediate condensation. Allow the camera to acclimate by keeping it in the shade for 15-20 minutes before exposing it to direct sunlight.
Use Silica Gel Packs
Place silica gel packs in the drawers where you store your equipment. These packs absorb moisture and can be dried in the sun and reused, making them a cost-effective solution.
Invest in Airtight Storage
The most effective way to protect your equipment from damage caused by humidity and mold is to invest in an airtight storage box. Adding silica gel packs to the storage box will also help absorb moisture.
Reliable storage boxes available in Bali cater to every budget: you can choose from simple airtight boxes or more advanced options that regulate temperature and humidity. While the latter are pricier, they offer enhanced protection.
You can also create your own DIY storage box. Check out this article for details.
I hope these tips help you safeguard your valuable equipment from Bali's humidity!
