The cultural park Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) in Ungasan has cancelled fireworks on the night of January 1, 2026.

The decision not to hold fireworks was made as a 'sign of empathy and solidarity' with the people of Indonesia affected by natural disasters. The GWK Bali Countdown 2026 event will proceed, but without pyrotechnics — organizers promise to continue the program in the form of a joint prayer.
For GWK, this is a significant change: fireworks used to be one of the key 'features' of Countdown 2026. The venue promoted the event as the largest New Year's party in Bali, promised over 10,000 bursts and fireworks to music, essentially aiming to be the main New Year's meeting point on the island.
Previously, similar restrictions were also announced in Kuta: the police banned the sale of firecrackers and fireworks and restricted their use in the Kuta area, including the beach district.
In late November to December 2025, heavy monsoon rains and storm systems on the island of Sumatra triggered flash floods and landslides in three provinces — Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. A total of 1,140 people were killed, 163 are reported missing, and about 399,200 residents were forced to leave their homes.
