Guide to Vaccination in Bali: Process, Costs, and Available Vaccines

If you’re planning to get vaccinated in Bali, this guide provides a detailed overview of the process, including where to go, what to prepare, how much it costs, and the types of vaccines available. Additionally, we’ll cover whether certain vaccines are necessary based on health data.

Vaccinations

1. Choosing a Clinic

Most clinics in Bali offer vaccination services, but the price and availability of specific vaccines can vary.
One recommended option is Klinik Utama Vidyan Medika (📍Google Maps, 📱 WhatsApp: +62-859-6705-3469). This clinic was chosen for several reasons:
• Many people have already been vaccinated there, and feedback has been positive.
• It offers lower prices compared to other clinics, except for the Qdenga dengue vaccine.
• The clinic stocks a wide range of vaccines, including less commonly available ones.
• They provide information about vaccine availability and pricing via WhatsApp, which some clinics, like Sanglah and Mandra, do not.
Vaccination is a standard service in most clinics, so you can choose based on convenience and cost.

2. Registration Process

Upon arrival at the clinic, proceed to the reception desk and inform the staff that you’re there for vaccination. If English is not well understood, Google Translate can be helpful.
• No appointment is needed for adult vaccinations; they operate on a walk-in basis.
• For children, an appointment with a pediatrician is required.
Bring a passport and have your personal details (name, phone number, address) ready. Some clinics issue an international vaccination card, which records all administered vaccines. If you already have one, confirm whether a new one is needed.

3. Health Check & Doctor Consultation

Before vaccination, you’ll be asked to fill out a health questionnaire and undergo a basic check-up (blood pressure and temperature).
If you’re planning to receive multiple vaccines at once, some doctors may initially refuse due to concerns about potential allergic reactions. However, international health guidelines, such as the MSD Manual and CDC recommendations, confirm that simultaneous vaccination is safe and effective.
To address concerns, you can:
• Show CDC guidelines that multiple vaccines can be administered safely, even in the same muscle.
• Present previous vaccination records as proof of past tolerance.
• Offer to stay at the clinic for 30 minutes post-vaccination to monitor any potential reactions.

4. Vaccine Administration

Once approved, a nurse will prepare the vaccines. They will show each vial’s packaging to verify its authenticity and expiration date before administration.
Vaccines are given in the deltoid muscle, with spacing of about one inch between injections. The process is quick and relatively painless.

5. Post-Vaccination & Documentation

After receiving the shots, the clinic staff will:
• Update your vaccination card (or issue a new one).
• Provide vaccine packaging labels for reference.
Electronic vaccination records
• Register the vaccines in an online system with a QR code linking to your digital records on sinkarkes.kemkes.go.id.
This process may take up to 45 minutes.

6. Payment & Total Cost

The total cost for a set of four vaccines was 3,824,000 IDR (~$250), broken down as follows:
• Gardasil-9 (HPV) – 2,060,000 IDR
• Imojev (Japanese Encephalitis) – 500,000 IDR
• Qdenga (Dengue Fever) – 795,500 IDR
• Hepatitis B (recombinant vaccine) – 181,500 IDR
• Administrative fees – 75,000 IDR
• Doctor consultation & processing – 170,000 IDR
• Injection service – 42,000 IDR
After vaccination, no severe side effects were experienced—only minor soreness at the injection sites. Normal activities, including gym workouts, resumed the next day.

Vaccines Recommended for Bali & Their Costs
CDC Recommendations for Travelers to Indonesia
• Dengue Fever (Qdenga) – 795,500 IDR (~$50)
• Japanese Encephalitis (Imojev) – 500,000 IDR (~$30)
• Typhoid (Typhim Vi) – 251,500 IDR (~$15)
• Hepatitis A (Havrix) – 405,000 IDR (~$25)
• Hepatitis B – 181,500 IDR (~$11)
Key Considerations:
• Dengue fever is widespread in Bali, and Qdenga provides 70% protection against severe hospitalization.
• Japanese Encephalitis is transmitted by mosquitoes and is more common in rural areas, but 34% of viral encephalitis cases in Bali are linked to this disease.
• Typhoid is transmitted through contaminated food and water; cases among expats have been reported.
• Hepatitis A and B are preventable but common infections in Indonesia.

Additional Vaccines Available in Bali & Recommendations

💉 Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Gardasil-9
• Cost in Vidyan Medika: 2,060,000 IDR (~$130)
• Prodia: Gardasil-9 – 2,707,500 IDR (~$170), Gardasil-4 – 1,549,000 IDR (~$95)
• Kuala Lumpur (Alam Medic Bukit Jelutong): 550 MYR (~$120)
• Doses required: 2 or 3 doses
Why consider it?
Gardasil-9 protects against nine high-risk HPV types associated with cervical, anal, and other cancers. While condoms reduce transmission, HPV can spread through skin-to-skin contact. The CDC states that almost everyone who has been sexually active has encountered HPV at some point.
Who should get it?
• If you have a single long-term partner, the risk is lower.
• If you may have new partners in the future, vaccination could provide valuable protection.
• Many countries recommend vaccination before the age of 26, but older adults can still benefit.
💉 Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccine
• Cost: 528,000 IDR (~$33)
Why consider it?
• If you never had chickenpox, this vaccine is essential.
• The virus can cause serious complications in adults, including pneumonia and encephalitis.
💉 Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR II)
• Vidyan Medika: 442,500 IDR (~$28)
• Prodia: 592,025 IDR (~$36)
• Kuala Lumpur (Dr. Prevents): 90 MYR (~$20)
Important Notes:
• This is a live vaccine. If you need other live vaccines (such as Qdenga or Imojev), they should be given on the same day or at least one month apart.
💉 Pneumococcal Infection (Prevnar 13)
• Vidyan Medika: 705,000 IDR (~$45)
• Prodia: 950,000 IDR (~$58)
Why consider it?
• Recommended for children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems.
• Protects against pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections caused by pneumococcal bacteria.
💉 Meningococcal Infection (Menivax ACYW-135)
• Cost: 305,000 IDR (~$19)
Why consider it?
• Protects against bacterial meningitis.
• Mandatory for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia.
💉 Influenza (Flu) Vaccine
• Vidyan Medika: 300,000 IDR (~$19)
• Prodia: 345,000 IDR (~$21)
Why consider it?
• Influenza is present in Bali year-round, just like anywhere else.
• Reduces the risk of severe illness and complications.
• Highly recommended before flu season (rainy season in Bali: November – March).
💉 Yellow Fever (Stamaril)
• Cost: 532,500 IDR (~$33)
Important Notes:
• Yellow fever does not exist in Indonesia.
Missing Vaccine: Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
Unfortunately, Vidyan Medika does not stock the Tdap booster. This vaccine is recommended every 10 years and protects against:
• Tetanus (contracted from wounds)
• Diphtheria (a serious throat infection)
• Pertussis (whooping cough) (dangerous for infants and unvaccinated adults)
Key Takeaways:
✅ Plan ahead – Some vaccines require multiple doses.
✅ Check availability – Certain vaccines may need to be ordered in advance.
✅ Consider convenience – Home vaccination services like Imuni offer an alternative option.
✅ Travelers should check country-specific vaccine requirements (e.g., Yellow Fever for Africa/South America, Meningococcal for Saudi Arabia).
If you’re unsure which vaccines are necessary for your situation, consult with a doctor or review CDC travel guidelines for Indonesia.
If you plan to stay long-term or travel around Indonesia, getting these vaccines one month before arrival is recommended for full immunity.
Final Thoughts
Vaccination in Bali is a straightforward process, and clinics offer a range of vaccines at affordable prices compared to Western countries. Whether you choose a walk-in clinic or a home vaccination service, planning ahead ensures you get the necessary protection.
