Scandalous incidents involving foreigners in Bali continue to raise concerns among authorities. This time, 37-year-old German citizen Hendri Bruno Torper has caused a stir. He attacked and beat a 28-year-old woman who was riding a motorbike.
"The suspect assaulted B.A., a student. He stopped her motorbike and beat the victim until she fell," reported Denpasar Police Chief Kombes Pol Vishnu Prabowo at the Kuta police station.
Not stopping there, he damaged the villa he was staying in by breaking windows with stones. He also targeted a neighboring house. During his rampage, he threatened villa staff with a knife. Naturally, witnesses called the police, but apprehending the offender was not easy—he started throwing stones at the approaching officers but failed to hit them. Eventually, the police, with the help of local residents, managed to subdue the attacker and take him to the Kuta police station. The police are currently investigating the incident.
Bali Police Public Relations Chief Kombes Pol Jansen Avitus Panjaitan stated that, according to preliminary investigations, the actions of the tourist were triggered by family problems in his home country.
The German citizen is charged under Article 351 of the Criminal Code, as well as Article 335 "Threat of Violence," Article 335 "Criminal Damage," and Article 2, Paragraph 1 of Indonesian Law No. 12 of 1951 on bladed weapons, which could result in up to 10 years in prison.
Kuta Police Chief Ketut Pasek Sudina stated that specialists will conduct a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect, as there are suspicions that the foreigner is suffering from depression. These suspicions arose due to the foreigner's behavior, as several witnesses reported that he did not pay for drinks and often shouted at random people and staff.
