American tourist Sebastiano Castellano, 23, who was staying at the Alam Batu Hotel in Karangasem, was found dead on Baturinggit Beach.
The grim discovery was reported by 46-year-old Gede Swibawa from the village of Penuktukan. Around 4 PM, he found the foreigner lying face down on the beach and called several other witnesses. Together, they turned the body over and tried to administer first aid, hoping the man could still be saved, but their efforts were in vain. Near the body, they found fins, a mask, and other snorkeling gear.
Realizing they could no longer help, the witnesses called the police. Officers arrived at the scene with a doctor who confirmed the death. The deceased was then taken to the regional hospital in Karangasem.
Police Public Relations Officer Iptu I Gede Sukadana explained that the cause of the American's death is still unknown, but it is suspected that Sebastiano drowned while snorkeling.
It is worth noting that, despite the ocean sometimes appearing calm and friendly, it remains an unpredictable and sometimes ruthless force that should be treated with respect. Avoid swimming alone, assess your abilities realistically, and never hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
