Foreign Tourist Falls into Ravine While Climbing Mount Agung

A 33-year-old tourist from Slovakia fell into a three-meter ravine during her ascent to the sacred Balinese mountain, Agung.
The woman was climbing to the summit with a friend and a local guide. The group started late in the evening from the Pengubengan Temple in the village of Besakih on Friday. The incident happened at around 5:30 AM at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level, near the I Kori Agung post. According to the guide, the girl slipped and fell into the ravine at one point along the path.
As a result of the fall, the tourist cut her chin, injured her little finger with ligament damage, and later complained of dizziness and nausea — possible signs of a concussion.
The guide immediately contacted the Karangasem search-and-rescue post. Coordinator I Gusti Ngurah Eka Wiadnyana organized the operation in cooperation with the Rendang Police, local guides, and the disaster management agency. Rescuers split into two groups: the first set off at 7:30, and the second at 9:55.
The injured woman was found at 1,800 meters — she was already descending by herself, and the rescuers just accompanied her in case her condition worsened. The group reached the parking lot near the Pengubengan Temple at 11:05. The injured woman declined medical assistance.
Fortunately, the incident ended well — largely thanks to the quick response of the guide and rescuers. However, it serves as a reminder of how a brief moment of inattention can be dangerous in the mountains.
Reminder: ascending Agung without a guide is prohibited. If you're caught without a guide, you won't avoid the consequences. Even putting aside potential fines — in case of injury, guides are the ones who can provide first aid and call for rescuers.
