Firefly Garden in Ubud Wins Top Ecotourism Award

In Bali, there is a place where the magic of nature truly comes alive — the Firefly Garden in Taro village, near Ubud. This unique attraction has been recognized as one of the leading ecotourism initiatives in the region as part of the celebration of Indonesia's 80th independence anniversary.

The Fireflies Garden is not just a tourist attraction. It is an independent initiative by local residents aiming to preserve fireflies as bioindicators of ecosystem health. These insects can only thrive in environmentally clean conditions.
The idea was born accidentally. Local residents switched to organic farming, started using only natural fertilizers and biopesticides, and soon fireflies returned to the fields. Over time, their numbers grew so much that a conservation center was established.
Inside the garden, there is a small laboratory where the life cycle and behavior of fireflies are studied. Currently, only four farmers are involved in the project, but there are plans to engage 35 and expand the flight area to 27 hectares. The initiative has benefited not only Taro village's ecology but also the local community by generating new sources of income and more organic products.
The Firefly Garden currently offers visitors two packages. The Firefly Tour Package costs 100,000 rupiah per person, where you can enjoy the magic of fireflies in their natural environment and taste local tea or coffee and snacks made from fried cassava. A special Romantic Dinner Package is available for couples at 500,000 rupiah, featuring a candlelit dinner with a view of the fireflies, a gourmet menu, and a tour of the garden.
At the awards ceremony, alongside the Firefly Garden, other conservation winners were also recognized. Komang Wiratama Putra received an award for the best innovation with the Raja Prani farmer group's project, aimed at developing new efficient methods for cultivating high-value shallots.
In the field of marine and fisheries, Ketut Adi Putra from Pering village received recognition for the modern modification of the Jukung Sky Boat for local fishermen — a traditional Indonesian wooden boat with two balancing floats.
