No one expected such a discovery on a beach frequented by tourists. A dead whale washed ashore on Berawa Beach in Canggu, and the footage quickly went viral on social media.

Some users, observing the condition of the animal, speculated that the carcass had been drifting in the ocean for quite some time. Typically, recently deceased whales look different, whereas this one showed clear signs of decomposition. The whale was urgently removed from the beach using heavy machinery.
In such cases, environmental protection authorities are usually called first. They inspect and measure the deceased animal before approving its burial, which takes place right on-site, as transportation is not an option. This was the case in December, when a 7-meter-long whale was found on Legian Beach, believed to have died after becoming entangled in fishing nets.

There is little official information about the Berawa incident, so the cause of death remains unknown. However, the discovery has sparked public concern. Some online users link the event to ocean pollution and environmental issues, though other factors may also be at play.
Finding dead marine mammals along coastlines is not uncommon. Changes in wind direction can push whales into shallow waters, putting them at risk. In some cases, their herd instinct drives other whales to attempt a rescue, causing multiple whales to become stranded together. Additionally, sick or elderly whales may intentionally swim toward the shore if they struggle to stay afloat, and low tides can lead to their demise.
