GWK Park Fence Sparks Controversy: Locals Tear Down Barrier

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Park in Ungasan, known for the giant Garuda statue, has become the center of a conflict.

In late 2024, the complex's management extended the concrete fence, blocking the road to Banjar Giri Dharma, which locals had used for decades. The alternative route was long and inconvenient, and the remaining narrow gap was impossible for motorcycles.
Residents approached the Bali Provincial House of Representatives (DPRD), demanding the removal of the wall. In September, deputies set a deadline for dismantling until September 29. Bali's Governor also urged the GWK management to voluntarily open access, warning that the police would intervene otherwise.
On October 1st, the dismantling began: specifically removing sections of the fence that blocked the path to homes. Thus, residents’ access was restored, and the conflict reached a temporary resolution. However, fences still occupy significant areas without any constructions, and locals do not rule out further demands for fence removal.
