Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using the Auto Gates at Bali Airport

The auto gates at Denpasar Airport’s international terminal have been in use for several months, helping to speed up passport control for both Indonesian citizens and international travellers. There are currently 120 auto gates in operation at Ngurah Rai Airport.

Auto gates are available for Indonesians with any type of passport, as well as foreign travellers holding electronic passports and e-visas. The process is efficient, taking just an average of 23 seconds. For those who prefer the traditional method, immigration counters are also available.
Silmi Karim, the CEO of the immigration service, stated that the auto gate system has reduced passport control time to just 15-25 seconds. "This is a breakthrough in creating a more efficient and effective flow of immigration checks," he said.
Currently, around 67% of international travellers and 62% of Indonesian passport holders use the auto gates. To encourage more passengers to use the new technology, the immigration service has provided a set of helpful tips to avoid mistakes when passing through the auto gates.
For your convenience, we list them here:
#1
Avoid crossing the wide line on the floor until it's your turn to approach the auto gates. The yellow line indicates the space for those waiting behind others using the gates, ensuring they have enough room to pass through. By maintaining this distance, you help prevent blocking the gates from opening or closing and avoid interfering with the identity verification camera.
#2
Photography, videography, and selfies are strictly prohibited at the auto gates and throughout the immigration area, including at regular immigration counters. Anyone caught taking photos or videos may be subject to additional checks and questioning.
#3
While waiting in line for the auto gate, make sure your passport is open to the biometric page. This is the only page the auto gate can scan. Scanning the wrong page will cause delays.
#4
Remove any face accessories, such as masks and sunglasses, as the scanner needs a clear view of your face. Hats, caps, and headphones should also be taken off in advance.
#5
Make sure to take all your belongings with you when crossing the auto gates, as many passengers unintentionally leave their carry-on bags behind.
Immigration officers are always nearby to assist you. They speak multiple languages, including English, and are ready to help if you encounter any issues when using the auto gates.
