The Bali Tourism Department has expressed growing concern over the increasing number of rule violations by tourists on the island. In response, they are intensifying efforts to install informational boards with infographics outlining the “Do’s and Don’ts” for visitors. These boards will be placed in strategic locations where tourists are most likely to see them. The initiative aims to reduce the number of violations, which are frequently committed by foreign tourists.
The Head of the Bali Tourism Department, Tjok Bagus Pemayun, has voiced concern over the rise in criminal incidents involving foreign tourists. Recently, numerous videos have gone viral on social media, showcasing incidents ranging from drunken behavior on the streets, fights, and traffic violations to a recent assault on security guards at Finns Beach Club in Canggu. He particularly emphasized this last incident, stating that not all tourists visit Bali with good intentions.
“I have seen the video, and it is deeply regrettable. This is beyond anything we expected,” Pemayun stated. He also confirmed that his department would continue discussions with law enforcement authorities, including police and immigration services, to address these issues.
In addition to physical signboards, the rules are already being distributed digitally through:
✔ Bali’s airport,
✔ The official website of the Bali Tourism Department,
✔ QR codes, which tourists can scan and read on their devices.
Furthermore, this information has been shared with foreign consulates to increase awareness among international travelers.
🔹 The plan includes installing these information boards in 10 key locations, including Kuta, Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, and Bedugul.
🔹 A large “Do’s and Don’ts” board has already been placed in front of the Bali Tourism Department office.
🔹 More signs will be added to beach clubs and nightlife venues, where violations are most common.
The Bali government has already issued regulations governing tourist behavior, including:
✔ Regional Regulations (Perda)
✔ Governor’s Regulations (Pergub)
✔ Circular Letter (SE) No. 4 of 2023
Importantly, these laws apply equally to both locals and foreigners.
What is Allowed on Bali?
✔ Respect local culture, including wearing modest clothing.
✔ Participate in traditional ceremonies and show respect.
✔ Visit cultural and historical sites.
✔ Respect local residents and fellow tourists.
✔ Use official currency exchange points to avoid scams.
✔ Follow traffic regulations.
✔ Try traditional Balinese food.
✔ Learn the basics of the Indonesian language.
What is Forbidden on Bali?
❌ Working without an official permit.
❌ Engaging in illegal activities.
❌ Using drugs.
❌ Driving without a license or violating traffic laws.
❌ Taking inappropriate photos in temples and sacred places.
❌ Littering in public places.
❌ Stepping on canang sari (traditional offerings often placed on sidewalks and public areas).
❌ Haggling excessively in markets.
Authorities hope that tourists who read these simple rules will be more mindful of local laws and traditions, ensuring order and comfort for everyone.
Perhaps these guidelines should also include penalties for violations, as highlighting consequences may encourage better behavior.
🔴 Previously, 32 red signs with QR codes were installed at 16 immigration control counters at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport. By scanning the codes, travelers could access a guideline booklet that was earlier posted on Bali’s immigration office Instagram page.
🔹 Now, billboards with these rules will be placed across the streets of the island, reinforcing Bali’s commitment to maintaining its cultural integrity and a respectful tourism environment.
