In the middle of this year, Bali will host the 26th Inter-Island Tourism Policy Forum (ITOP Forum). Established on July 23–25, 1997, the forum aims to explore the global tourism market through dialogue between island authorities with similar cultures, structures, and tourism policies.
The forum will bring together representatives from 10 island regions: Bali (Indonesia), Jeju (South Korea), Hainan (China), Okinawa (Japan), Phuket (Thailand), Penang (Malaysia), Hawaii (USA), Zanzibar (Tanzania), Southern Province (Sri Lanka), and Cebu (Philippines). Despite their geographical distances, these islands share high popularity among travelers and a common focus on island-based tourism industries.
With such a diverse group, there is always plenty to discuss and share. The forum will take place at the governor level, meaning the decisions and outcomes of the cooperation are expected to be significant. According to the official ITOP Forum website, the organization serves as an advisory body for local governments.
During the forum, regional leaders collaborate on tourism product development, strengthening island economies, and conducting joint research to improve tourism management.
Another key commitment of ITOP members is to enhance the quality of life for island residents through economic development and globalization. Additionally, the forum will focus on addressing shared challenges in tourism and environmental sustainability, including climate change and global warming.
Bali, often called the “Island of the Gods,” was chosen to host the forum as it is one of the world’s top destinations for MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions). The island’s modern infrastructure and strong international connectivity make it an ideal location for high-level events of this scale.
